Apprenticeships – is a way that helps me to get a better handle on character backgrounds.  I am a bit of a background geek and sometimes write huge back stories for my characters.  I even go back and add details later, if I ‘need to know’ something about the character’s early life – that way I know I will remember what I said next time the issue comes up.
