Heraldry: Mottoes  

Crests are are simple phrases selected by the individual, family, or region to represent their philosophy.  They are not present in every coats of arms, although they are becoming more common, generally the older and more established the arms, the more likely it is to have a motto.  

Mottoes are generally shown immediately below the shield when the full Coat of Arms is displayed, such at above the door to the Manor House, or on a standard or pennant.
