Halflings
Halflings are a race, which has ‘evolved’ in the
D&D game setting. Starting off as
rural bumpkins in their own communities, Halflings have grown to become highly
opportunistic individuals, attaching themselves to other races’
communities. In this game, we recognise
both archetypes. You will find sharp
business-halflings out to for the next GP, but you will also find groups of
Halflings putting agricultural or rural abilities to good use.
In towns and cities you are liable to find brokers and traders, while in the
countryside you may well find that Halflings run the local store, or are
involved in a trade caravan route.
However, you will also find well run Halfling farms as well as Halfling
trappers etc. Halflings seem to get everywhere, although even they find it difficult to make
much of a living in Laroy, although they are fairly well represented every
where else. They are particularly well
represented in developed or growing areas - as they can carve better
opportunities for themselves in those environments.
Hapsburg, in Falmar, is fairly indicative of the way Halflings settle into a
community. The Sethring clan (lead by
Beau Sethring) own the local store and run trade wagons into the nearest
city. As a ‘side’ business, other members
of the clan manufacture items for sale in the store, while another Halfling,
Lavinia Thorngage, is an influential farmer in the town. Both Beau and Lavinia
rank among the ‘influential’ NPCs in Hapsburg and the local Laird will often
sound them out before making a decision.
Other areas are similar, although Falmar (and Hapsburg) has a large
percentage of Halflings in its
population and other areas may not have quite such a large proportion of
influential Halflings.
