The Wherry
The Wherry is a simple
vessel, it comes to a point at each end,
rather than having a transom, sports a single mast and gaff rigged sail, a
steering oar and a pair of normal oars for use if the wind is wrong. It
measures 22 feet from stem to stern and six feet wide in the middle. At each
end of the boat there are small boxed-in locker areas, used to store
equipment and day to day supplies.
It can move at 3 miles per hour under sail, or 1 mile an hour using the oars, and is generally crewed by 3 people. Only one person is actually required to sail the boat, although it is easier with two and three people are often required to handle the fishing equipment though. At least one person need Boating skills to sail her properly. As well as a crew of two, the fishing boat can carry another four people (uncomfortably) or up to 1500lbs of fish. Sailed single handed it will hold 2000lbs of cargo. |
