The Founding of Porter's Bar

Lei was slave, like her mother and grandmother before her, and like her mother - she inherited a wildness and strength of character, and a fondness and bond with the sea. But Lei had a chance to escape, and she took it with both hands. Her master sent his cousin and a caravan of goods as dowry across county to another lord, to establish a bond buy marriage between the two families. And Lei was sent as a maid to care for and look after the bride to be.

However bandits attacked the caravan as they travelled through some swamplands. The honour guard were killed, and the goods taken, and the bride and her servants captured and held prisoner. Eventually, the bride was ransomed - but Lei was one of the slaves than managed to bargain for her release and a place amongst the bandits.

Soon her skill with a nagimata was winning her respect among her peers and before long she started to travel with her now colleagues on raids. Unfortunately, the insult offered to the two noble houses who were trying to cement bonds between then and increased levels of raiding was too much for the establishment. Soon the bandits were forced from their camp and were forced to live as fugitives in the wild-lands of the local swamp.

There they renewed their alliance with Han Shay, a coiled Dragon from in the swamp, whom they had dealing with in the past, and he came to their aid on a number of occasions. Eventually, the numbers of soldiers and bounty hunter who were searching for them became to great., and they decided to flee .. It was as they fled that the leader wads killed, and Han Say (in his human form) took command of the rag tag troops and made Lei his lieutenant. Between them they led their band back towards the coast, where, eventually, they found a group of sailors about to be executed for smuggling. Han Shay and his men quickly freed the men and raided the harbour, stealing 3 small Junks and fleeing to the open sea.

Soon it became clear that the imperial navy did not intend to let them escape, and a fleet was launched to capture and bring them back. Skilful as the smuggler leaders were, they could not evade the ships and it looked as if the end was close - when Lei took her stand. Alone on the stern deck of the last of their ships, wind whipping her cloak dramatically around her shoulders, she called upon her master, the Lord of the Sea. Gradually the seas rose around the following fleet and their winds died down, while the sea in-front of the fleeing junks remained calm and a good wind filled their sails. These conditions prevailed for 3 days, until the last of the imperial fleet decided to turn back and give the chase up.

Later in the voyage the small fleet was faced with a kraken that intended to take one of their ships to the bottom of the sea with them. However, Han Shay quickly assumed his draconic form and flew to confront the beast - In the battle of wills between the two, Han Shay was victorious, and the kraken sunk back into the depths.

They managed to keep all three ships watertight and sailing until they were virtually in sight of land - when a violent storm wrecked one of the ships. Han's flight managed to save many of the crew and Lei managed to save another couple from drowning, by diving into the raging sea and dragging them to safety. Although many were saved - some were lost, almost at the end of their epic journey. The two over crowded and waterlogged ships finally made landfall somewhere along the eastern Coast of Sachan.

While the crew repaired the ships, Han flew off to find a suitable place for his men to settle. It was important to hi to get the location right. He needed a swamp or a marsh for himself and to be near the sea to make Lei happy. He examined the southern coasts and found what is now Tarila, but was more pleased when he flew north and found the northern shores.

Gathering his men together, he ferried them to the new site, losing another ship in the process. But they all got there safely.

Claiming the sea bar for himself and his men, he encouraged the ships captains to take their crews further inland and build settlements. Almost as soon as they were settled the lizard men, who ruled the swamplands attacked them - but years of fighting had toughened Han Shay's men to a point where they easily drove off the attackers. Then a few forays out into the swamps in his draconic form soon convinced the Lizard men that it was wise to concede this small piece of ground on the edge of their swamp. Before long, the security of this new-found establishment became know locally, and people from local tribes and villages drifted I to join them. Using their last remaining ship they explored the coast line and forged relationships with other residents - but perhaps the biggest bonus was discovering the Old Scragg Dwarves and establishing trade with them. Porter's Bar was born.

Han Shay, Lei, and the three captains Arsh, Cran and Felaay are remembered as the founding fathers of Porters bar.
