Punishments

Once a criminal is found guilty the judge  will decide the severity of the case. S/he will consider  the degree of damage caused, the motive, and take into consideration  any previous offences.    Cases will be classified  as Minor, Common, Serious, Severe or Extreme.  Once that is established -  the Judge  will allow the victim to  select the punishment the perp gets, from the list offered below. 

The Fullster Makay case study

 

Theft - includes all crimes where things are stolen, and might also includes handling the stolen property.

  1. Minor = return of the goods or cash to the value of (only if item not available) Plus
    Compensation equal to the value of the item,
    or
    Four hours in the stocks,
    or
    Two lashes on the public block.

  2. Common = return of the goods or cash to the value of (only if item not available) Plus
    Compensation equal to twice the value of the item,
    or
    1 day in the stocks,
    or
    Four lashes on the public block.

  3. Serious = return of the goods or cash to the value of (only if item not available) Plus
    Compensation equal to three times the value of the item,
    or
    1 day in the stocks plus a branding,
    or
    Four lashes on the public block plus a branding.

  4. Severe = return of the goods or cash to the value of (only if item not available) Plus:
    Compensation equal to five times the value of the item plus a branding, or
    1 day in the stocks, four lashes on the public block plus a branding, or
    Amputation of Left Hand & a branding (if not already done).

Assault - Includes all crimes against the body, such as assault, rape and murder.

  1. Minor - cash compensation to the value of the injury (see below), plus
    Extra compensation of the same value
    or
    Four hours in the stocks,
    or
    Two lashes on the public block.

  2. Common = cash compensation to the value of the injury (see below), plus
    Extra compensation equal to twice the original value
    or
    1 day in the stocks,
    or
    Four lashes on the public block.

  3. Serious = cash compensation to the value of the injury (see below), plus
    Extra compensation equal to three times the original value
    or
    1 day in the stocks plus a branding,
    or
    Four lashes on the public block plus a branding.

  4. Severe = cash compensation to the value of the injury (see below), plus
    Extra compensation equal to five times the original value
    or
    1 day in the stocks, four lashes on the public block plus a branding,
    or
    Amputation of Left Hand & a branding

  5. Extreme - cash compensation to the value of the injury (see below), plus:
    Extra compensation equal to ten times the original value,
    or
    1 day in the stocks, four lashes on the public block plus a branding, and Amputation of Left Hand,
    or
    Death.

Remember this value is not the absolute value - but is multiplied by a number from 1 (Minor offence with other punishment) to 11 (Buying out an extreme offense). Killing a member of the royal family where the prince/princess decides to take the money will cost 1408 PP.

 

Non Payment of Fines

Where the victim decides to take a cash settlement and the perp cant pay: Perpetrator wages or income can be indentured by the city with options to convert to indentured labour later if payments are not kept up. If the perp is seen as likely to abscond or cannot earn enough money to pay up at an acceptable rate - the perp is indentured into the city navy to serve as an oarsman aboard one of the fleet galleys. They get keep and board and pay off their debt to society at One unit per month ?
