The lighthouse stands on a small
rocky island jus off shore from Porters bar, to guide and welcome ships into
this busy port.
It is the life work of cannon Aubrey Shay who designed and built it at the
request of Prince Anderon. His first task was to get the support of the local
temples o and after a lot of effort he managed to convince both the Arthians and
the Temple of Shan that it was a good idea. During the building of the tower
priests from all three temples blessed the construction and inscribed their holy
symbols on the outer walls.
First Aubrey built a low round house that would form the living accommodation
for the lighthouse keepers. Then he built a tall narrow tower, 70 feet high,
with a single staircase winding around its inner wall. At the very top he built
a triangular platform and used pillars carved into the symbols of Arth, Shan and
the Royal Ancestors to support the roof. A the lighthouse platform seemed to
point out to see with Arth and the Royal Ancestors closest to the city, guarding
it, and Shan looking far out to sea ....
Initially Aubrey used a continual light spell, backed it with a mirror and a
placed a lens in front of it, and it worked well, but he still wasn't happy with
the result. Augmenting his ecclesiastical studies, Aubrey decided to research
more widely, and research with mages, so that he could understand the workings
of arcane spells better. He restricted himself to studies of light producing
spells and eventually developed a new spell, now called Cannon Aubrey's Beacon.
This 4th level spell appears to be the same as a normal light spell, except that
it is much brighter and is visible from 2 miles away. Next he constructed a
beautiful sphere carved with a motif of the three gods helping a damaged ship.
Each of the statues holding up the lighthouse roof was dedicated as a shrine to
that god, and after the sphere was installed in the light house, priests of each
god held vigil asking for assistance in preparing the sphere .. It is believed
that Arth prepared the sphere, Aubrey cast his spell and Shan made the effects
permanent. Finally Aubrey built a wall to deflect the light from his own city,
and his task was complete….
