Farmers
run the spectrum from Lavinia Thorngage, a Halfling who runs one of the
largest farms in Hapsburg,
to Joshua Buthnot,who
has a small apple orchard and he has to find other work as well to help
support
his family. In between there are a number of medium sized farmers
working on
all sorts of plots. They
are supported by
farm labourers and general workers and, in some cases, domestic help as
well.
Most farms grow barley, corn, potatoes and cabbage; which provide the
staple
vegetables for most of the population, as well as supplying the
ingredients to
make bread and ale. They
often have
fields growing ‘gardened’ vegetable such as onion, beans and peas to
supplement
their crop as well.
Fruit farms tend to concentrate on grape and apples although many have
introduced at least a small orchard of plums as well.
The largest farms will combine cereals,
vegetable and fruit farming in one unit.
All farms will have some livestock around.
Perhaps just a few chickens at the smallest farm, while a
large farm
might well have a couple of milk cows, bullocks to pull carts and
ploughs and maybe
even a riding horse or two for the farmer and their family.
