The Falmic Order

 The Worshipful Order of Falmar

The Falmic Order is an order of chivalry with a responsibility to Falmar, her Duke and her people. It is primarily a Military Order and in times of war makes up the core of Falmar’s military forces. Most members of the Order owe military service, of one type or another, to one of the nobles through a semi-feudal system.  Membership of the Order is also used as a reward for enterprising characters who show leadership, determination and bravery, and who are known to have served the nation in a notable way.

Member of the Worshipful Order of Falmar is the induction level, and everyone joins the order at this level. level,. members  are the backbone of the order, they include the children of higher ranking members, who are automatically  admitted to the order as members,  junior functionaries, NCOs or ordinary citizens who show promise, or those  who deserve reward for special or long service.

Esquire of the Worshipful Order of Falmar is the first 'promoted' rank  is often awarded to members who work as lieutenants, junior watch officers,  commanders of small detachments or as a reward for special service.

Knight-Bachelor of the Worshipful Order of Falmar is the principle rank of the order.  These are Falmars officers.  they have proved themselves able to command  as  Guard Commanders, Company Captains, Commanders of Garrisons, etc.  Others might be promoted to Knigt for exceptional service.

Knight-Bannerette of the Worshipful Order of Falmar is a senior title reserved for those knights who hold land within Falmar, as either
Seigneur or Laird.

Knight-Commander of the Worshipful Order of Falmar designates those senior knights (normally the three barons) who will take command of a ‘regiment’ etc in times of war.

Grand-Commander of the Worshipful Order of Falmar  is normally the Duke himself, although he may appoint someone to act in his name as Deputy-Grand-Commander.

There are six divisions within the Falmic Order

The Dukes Own – this is reserved for the Duke’s personal body guard and those he wishes to reward on a  personal basis.

The Holy Chapter falls under the command of the Lord High Abbot of Falmar and consists of paladin’s and clerics.  The more senior clerics in all of the temples are members of the order, priors are often esquires and while priors of large temples may be advanced to the rank of knight.  The Lord High Abbot is the Knight Commander and the Senior Paladin is their Knight  Bannerette.  In times of war the Paladins and any militant clerics would ride to the battle front and fight as a division of heavy cavalry.

The Falmar City Division
The Matock Division
The Sittor Division
The Kethlow Division

The local Baron is the Knight Commander for each of the three ‘Baronial’ divisions, while the Lord-Marshal commands the Falmar City division.

In times of war, each of these four divisions are required to come together and take command of the Military and Levy forces in their region.  This is normally arranged into four units:  cavalry, infantry, missile and special troops.  The cavalry is normally made up of the mounted soldiery from the various military garrisons supplemented by any suitably mounted levy forces.  They wear a medium to light armour and carry a shield many carry a lance, although some are just armed with a hand weapon and form the ‘second rank’.  The infantry is composed mainly of levy forces armed with shield light armour and spear. They are joined by the remaining soldiers, bailiffs and experienced volunteers take command as file leaders or NCOs.  The missile company normally consists of local levy who carry sling & club who are supported by a few soldiers. Shields are recommended but are not compulsory.  This is the unit for those who cannot really fight but want to ‘do something’ or those who want minimum participation but still claim their tax relief. The special company is created from all of those who don’t fit comfortably into the other companies.  For example a priest from the local temple, or a well respected mage, or scout or members of the Order who fall outside the traditional structures.  Its members are either allocated to support other units or retained behind for head quarters or special duties.

In times of war most of a chapter’s cavalry will be send to reinforce the point of contact immediately, while infantry and missile troops will initially be arrayed defensively.

As an example Hapsburg contributes

15-20 or so cavalry under the command of Sir James Robech, Captain of the Guard, about two thirds of whom are equipped as first rank cavalry the rest as second rank.

There are also 10-15 mounted infantry equipped with bow, side arm and light armour, who can lay their hands on a mount. These are the rangers, hunters and scouts who will accompany the cavalry in their rush to the battle.  Once there they carry out scouting duties and provide added missile fire in defence of the city under attack.

40-50 infantry under the command of the Bailiff, Sam Whythe Esquire

70-80 missile troops under the command of the Guard Lieutenant Barett Kelham esquire.

30 special troops of one kind or another, who will be allocated duty by the Laird

It gives 18 - 20% of the population  with some military experience.
