Charbon’s
Tower was once an old military
defensive point, but Charbon bought the ruins from the Laird and had it
rebuilt. The tower
stands on a small
hill looking towards the mountains and is three stories tall. From the top Charbon has a
clear view of the
hills and lake and an excellent view of the night sky, should he choose
to
watch it. The lower part of the tower is built of big solid stone blocks, while the upper stories are a mixture of stone, patched up with locally made brick. Once the contrast would have been stark, but now the brick and mortar had aged, and mosses and lichens have grown - it all seems to blend in well. The area around the tower are gardens of mown grass with gravel paths, which lead to a flight of stone steps leading up to the reinforced oak door at the main entrance. Inside you come to a lobby room, where most of the minor business is transacted with Beryl, Carbon’s senior apprentice. Those who need to see Charbon will probably be shown into the dining room to await the mage’s pleasure, while personal guests of the mage may well be treated to a tour of the workrooms before being taken up to the mage’s apartments. The work room acts as both a teaching and a work room for his apprentices, and has a number of work benches on which experiments bubble and fizz away. Shelves line the walls containing a mixture of low level scrolls, potions and alchemical items for sale for sale to the public. And there is always an apprentice around to conduct a sale. Charbon himself is only rarely encountered in his workshops. Charbon also owns a small library that includes magical and achemetical recipes as well as other, similar, material. Under very special circumstances, he might grant access to the library, if he is asked nicely and suitable reimbursed. --------------------- Charborn Whitwar is an elderly man with long white hair and a grey beard who generally uses a walking staff. He normally dresses in slightly stained robes, has trouble hearing and can be very short with people. Sometimes, when he is talking, he will suddenly veer off on a completely unrelated conversation, and it is sometimes said (quietly) his mind has gone after years of working in alchemist labs. Beryl Half-Elven is a female halfelf, perhaps in her late twenties, who is Carborn’s Senior Apprentice. Most of the time she wears a heavy leather apron over her robes and possibly a pair of goggles perched on top of her head. She is the person you are most likely to see if you wish to buy any of the magical or alchemetic items that are for sale in the tower. Beryl knows her stuff, and can always give a brief description of the items that she is selling. However, she will not negotiate on price. Tenokerin Lostelf is Charbon’s latest apprentice, and is the one most likely to be sent to deal with people on his master’s behalf. This young elf often dresses in black clothing and carries a longbow with him. Jebeddo Nackle, a gnome, is the alchemist, is in charge of the pots and equipment as it bubbles away - he is rarely seen outside the workshops. There are a number of junior apprentices, mainly gnome, around the place who fetch, carry, keep the place tidy, cook and do the menial work in return for guidance in the 'Arts'. |
